Waterproofing of connectors – no more the weak link?
One of the key growth areas at Greenstock is the encapsulation of PCBs using our Low Pressure moulding process, usually this comes with a requirement to waterproof and environmentally seal the product. This is fine when sealing around the PCB and also to standard cabling, but often becomes a problem when trying to mould around PCB mounted connectors.
Typically waterproof connectors have relied on sealing to wires or cables and not to PCB’s they also tend to be big and bulky compared to their non-sealed counterparts, this makes them very unattractive to designers under pressure to make products fit an ever smaller footprint.
However a number of innovative seal connectors have come to market over recent months which try to address this problem, these include waterproof audio jack connectors, PCB headers and USB style connectors to name just a few.
Some more information on these is available at
https://www.cui.com/waterproof-audio-jacks - IP67 rated Stereo audio jacks
https://www.cui.com/waterproof-usb-connectors - IP67 rated Micro B and type C USB connectors
When using these products Greenstock is able to offer a fully sealed PCB module to IP67 with a robust PCB encapsulation at a faction of the price of traditional potting techniques – please call us on 01522 522522 for more information.
